Arts at the Capitol Theatre
Performing Arts Magnet School

Willimantic, CT

The existing Capitol Theatre was completely renovated and transformed into a performing arts magnet school for 150 students in grades 9 through 12. The theatre was originally built in 1925 and has not been used for several years. This adaptive reuse project involved remodeling the theatre space and adding new floors, corridors and stairways. The existing 35,000-SF building was expanded to 55,000 SF and houses studios, practice rooms, classrooms and offices.

BVH provided mechanical and electrical engineering design. The HVAC design included rooftop VAV air handling units with VAV boxes located throughout the school, as well as new DDC controls. The engineering design also included new electrical service fed from a pad-mounted utility company transformer rated at 3,000 amperes.
