Old State House

Hartford, CT

Designed by Charles Bulfinch and built in 1796, the Old State House is the oldest statehouse in the nation. The building opened in May of 1796 and was the center of government in Connecticut during much of the 1800s. The building was the seat of state government until 1878, when the present Capitol was opened. It was the site of the first written constitution and famed Amistad and Prudence Crandall trails. This beautiful brick landmark is filled with Connecticut's rich history and offers many interesting displays, special galleries, exhibits, and a museum shop. Moreover, this was Bulfinch’s first public building design.

BVH provided engineering design for this historical renovation (24,000 SF) and gallery addition (6,000 SF). The design included a new fire protection system, fire alarm system, security, lighting electrical service and HVAC (including humidity control). The challenges of the project were to laying out the HVAC systems and sprinkler piping in the existing building while maintaining the historical integrity of the building and the process of selection of fixtures and exposed devices to minimize impact on the architecture.
