Eck Center

South Bend, IN

The Eck Center at the University of Notre Dame is prominently located on Notre Dame Avenue on the main approach to the campus. The Center consists of two buildings with a total floor area of 90,000 SF. To the west is the main bookstore and retail building, which includes a cafe, administrative offices, and book and merchandise retail space. To the east, fronting Notre Dame Avenue, is the Alumni/Visitor Center, which includes a gallery area, an auditorium and the offices of the Notre Dame Alumni Association.

BVH provided mechanical and electrical engineering design for the Center’s plumbing, fire protection, HVAC, lighting, and power systems, and commissioning services. BVH also provided civil engineering services to design the underground campus utility tunnel system, which connects the Center to the campus utility grid, and connects the Center’s two buildings.

The major challenge for the design of this facility was incorporating state-of-the-art mechanical and electrical systems within the traditional Gothic Collegiate architecture that characterizes the University's renowned campus. To meet that end, equipment was carefully concealed in a manner sensitive to the building's design, while still maintaining high functionality and maintainability.
